Exhibition 2023 - ‘Unmasked’ at Bradford Industrial Museum

It gives me great pleasure (and a little anxiety) to announce my forthcoming exhibition of illustrations at Bradford Industrial Museum, 235 Moorside Rd, Eccleshill, Bradford BD2 3HP from Jan 31 2023 - May 29 2023, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, entitled ‘Unmasked’.

Here is the introduction;

Lindsay is an illustrator who lives in the Yorkshire Dales, where her family has a rich heritage.

She says ‘As a child, drawing was my safe place, and this theme has been a constant and passionate thread throughout my life. Recently diagnosed neurodivergent, drawing remains that place I go to express and explore my feelings about my experiences and the world around me, and this includes my mental health’.

As well as producing her own work Lindsay teaches and researches the benefits of creativity on mental health.

‘It’s my hope that taboos continue to be challenged and we can have an open dialogue around the range of different ways our brains function and related characteristic behaviours’.

I am also running a ‘meet the artist’ creative session with hourly demos 15/2 10-2pm. For more information, please click here.

Exhibition 2023 - Feature in Aspire Magazine

Aspire Magazine Yorkshire featured my upcoming exhibition at Bradford Industrial Museum in Issue 93 here. I will be posting a full brief in December.

The Exploring You Journal - Available on Etsy

Would you or someone you know benefit from a wellbeing journal designed with Neurodiversity in mind…?

I have carefully designed the content of this journal to assist with your own personal journey, using evidence-based research around good mental health and building confidence. Written with neurodiversity in mind, the journal can be useful to teens and adults. It has 144 black and white and coloured pages, and is an A5 interactive hardback book.

Why design, write & illustrate this Journal?

The word neurodiversity refers to the diversity of all people, but it is often used in the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD, and I write this journal with personal experience of Autism and ADHD. I am learning all the time about my own neurodivergence, so it’s fair to say whether ND or NT, we are all going to be different, and some topics in this journal will be more relatable than others.

There is so much evidence-based research around both journaling and drawing, that the health benefits of both cannot be denied. There's a strong connection between happiness and mindfulness. Journaling brings you into that state of mindfulness; problems in the past and future anxieties lose their edge in the present moment, whether you’re drawing, colouring, doodling or writing out how you feel. This internal learning experience can create empathy, and a better understanding of ourselves. Some examples of activities and contents include;

  • Setting healthy boundaries

  • Mental health prompts

  • Colouring

  • Doodling

  • Colour and mood

  • Different ways we learn

  • Celebrating diversity

  • Things we do just for fun

  • Role models and resilience

I produced 6 specific illustrations for this journal around the Six-factor Model of Psychological Wellbeing, which is a theory developed by Carol Ryff. It determines six factors which contribute to an individual's psychological well-being, contentment, and happiness. Psychological wellbeing consists of positive relationships with others, personal mastery, autonomy, a feeling of purpose and meaning in life, and personal growth and development. Psychological wellbeing is attained by achieving a state of balance affected by both challenging and rewarding life events. Carol said of my drawings “They are interesting and finely crafted”. My Wellbeing Art Journal

I designed, illustrated, wrote and self published this wellbeing art journal during lockdown 1, as a wellbeing creative tool / experience. Research suggests that journaling can help manage anxiety, reduce stress and help us cope with depression. It can also help prioritise problems, fears, and concerns, as well as track any symptoms day-to-day so that we can recognise triggers and learn ways to better control them. Journaling can provide an opportunity for positive self-talk and identify negative thoughts and behaviours (urmc.rochester.edu).
